Undergraduate Research Internship Program

The Institute for a Disaster Resilient Texas (IDRT) Undergraduate Research Internship Program invites motivated undergraduate students from all departments at Texas A&M University’s main campus and Texas A&M University at Galveston to gain hands-on experience in disaster resilience research. Interns will work on research projects, engage with graduate students and researchers and develop academic and professional skills to prepare for graduate school and future careers.

IDRT works to integrate analytical tools and decision-making processes that enhance disaster resilience across Texas. Through research, data analytics, and collaboration with state agencies, the Institute provides evidence-based solutions to reduce disaster risks and support community resilience.

Program Activities

Engage in Research & Innovation

Work alongside leading researchers, faculty, and graduate students on ongoing IDRT projects. Gain hands-on experience in research design, data collection, analysis, and problem-solving, while contributing to real-world studies in disaster resilience.

Develop Professional & Academic Skills

Attend conferences, workshops, and seminars to strengthen your skills and meet with professionals from diverse backgrounds and experience research activities.

Prepare for Graduate Study & Research Careers

Experience the expectations and environment of graduate-level research. Through mentorship, academic engagement, and applied projects, you will build a strong foundation for pursuing future graduate programs and research roles.

Program Details

This internship is a chance to expand your knowledge and experience, grow academic and professional skills, and contribute to making a real impact in disaster resilience research.

Duration and Compensation

The program runs for nine months (covering the spring and fall semesters) and requires a commitment of 10 hours per week. Interns will be compensated at a rate of $20 per hour.

Training and Mentorship

Receive guidance and support from Graduate Assistant Researchers (GARs), who will act as peer “buddies” throughout the program. You will also interact with researchers from various disciplines who lead a wide range of research projects.

Academic Credit

Earn up to four credit hours (484 option).

Any interested TAMUG undergraduate student is welcome to apply to the IDRT Undergraduate Research Internship Program by submitting the following materials:

Statement of Interest (maximum 500-600 words). Your statement should describe:
- Motivation – Why are you interested in the IDRT Research Internship Program? How does it relate to your academic studies, career goals, or personal interests?
- Skills and Experiences – What relevant coursework, projects, experiences, or skills would you bring to the internship?
- Goals – What do you hope to learn or achieve through this program? How will this internship help you grow academically, professionally, or personally?
- Contribution – How do you envision yourself contributing to the research team and IDRT’s mission of advancing disaster resilience?
Resume and Unofficial transcript. The minimum GPA required to apply to the program is 3.0.
- Tip: Structure your essay clearly with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Whenever possible, include specific examples from your academic or extracurricular experiences.
